Senior Tax Associate is primarily responsible for the Indirect Tax Function, including preparation and filings of all sales & use, gross receipts, and property tax returns and their defense on audit. Additionally, will assist with other tax compliance requirements for Sargento Foods Inc. including preparation of federal and state income and franchise tax returns, maintaining tax fixed asset records, and assistance in other projects as assigned.


Responsible for Sales and Use Tax compliance including preparing and filing monthly/quarterly/annual sales and use tax returns and advising the Accounts Payable group and other company personnel on various sales and use tax issues as well as focusing on process improvement and system maintenance for effective and efficient tax compliance. This also includes communicating directly with outside revenue agents in the event of an audit, as well as research and resolution of disputed issues with taxing authorities.

Assist in the preparation and review of federal and state income tax returns, extension requests and coordinate the quarterly estimated tax payments.

Assist in preparation of federal and state income tax provision and prepare requested schedules for year-end tax workpapers, the annual financial statement audit, quarterly planning and other special projects as requested.

Review state income and franchise tax returns for accuracy and planning opportunities. Provide review memorandum to Tax Manager and coordinate issue resolution with tax preparers. Assist with preparation of responses to various tax audits and to notices regarding federal and state tax issues.

Monitor current and proposed state tax laws and regulations to identify and access impact on the company. Maintain nexus related documentation and update based upon operational activities.

Perform tax research and analysis of tax issues pertaining to fixed assets, property taxes, sales & use taxes, including maintaining up to date process and procedures for compliance matters of same. Coordinate with Finance Department on process improvement measures and risk minimization strategies.

Maintain company's fixed asset records on a tax basis and prepare tax depreciation schedules for the corporate tax returns. This includes monitoring the cost segregation forms prepared by the Engineering group for completeness and communicating with outside contractors if required. Proactive analysis of major capital projects, including developing the proper tax classification and providing explanation of tax requirements to Accounting/Finance and Engineering as required.

Prepare annual property tax reports (forms MR/MP) and coordinate payments of property taxes. Perform analysis of property tax assessments and rates, as well as challenging excessive assessments and assist in the decision to pursue appeals where deemed necessary and cost effective.

Compile qualifying costs and complete federal and state fuel tax refund requests in a timely manner.

Prepare annual Forms 1099 and 1096 required for the company and related entities. Maintain system in SAP that ensures full compliance with reporting requirements, including coordination with Accounts Payable and Payroll.

Maintain the tax compliance calendar and file the appropriate license and permit renewals.

This job has no current supervisory responsibilities, but may in future if Financial Tax Analyst is Required to Assist.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
